FEW and Stanley Morgan’s Presentation of “Virtual Literary Brunch,” on Saturday, February 20, 2021, by Dawn Nester, Northeast Region/Greater Boston Chapter

If you were able to participate in this presentation, congratulations! I hope you enjoyed it as much or more than I did. For those who registered in advance, we received a gift box from Stanley Morgan that included three of the books that would be discussed, a mug, a pouch, and lemon hand soap, along with the recipe card for the brunch item that would be prepared at the opening of the program. There was joy in watching Chef Tommi Vincent prepare blue grits with curry shrimp.

The books included in the box were “The Book of Harlan,” by Bernice McFadden; “Blood Grove,” by Walter Mosley; and, “Cicely Tyson: Just as I am,” by Michelle Burford. Ms. Burford was not able to participate; however, Sheryl Lee Ralph was able to talk to the subject in her stead. The presenters also included Ms. Salamishah Tillet, who authored “In Search of the Color Purple.” An excerpt was read from each book.

Ms. McFadden stated that her book was inspired by the work of Dr. Firpo W. Carr, who brought to her attention the fact there had been black people imprisoned in Germany’s concentration camps during World War II. Her book is a work of fiction, but was an outgrowth of her learning.

Ms. Tillet spoke to how Alice Walker’s work, “The Color Purple,” had a direct and meaningful impact on her life as a young black woman struggling to find her way through life after suffering a rape. Her question, “Do you know what it feels like to be raped?” was powerful. She talked about what it took for her to reconcile what had happened to her and the how the words of Alice Walker’s book helped with that process.

Mr. Mosley is the author of “Easy Rawlins,” a black private investigator. He was originally told by would-be published, “Who is the audience for this? White people won’t read about a black private investigator; black women don’t trust men; and black men don’t read.” Those would-be publishers continue to be incorrect. When asked how he draws inspiration for his character, he honestly said, “Who knows?” He made and keeps a commitment to write three hours a day (usually in the morning), 365 days a year. Mr. Mosley, among other things, is working on a fictionalized story of the life of Louis Armstrong, and so much more.

Ms. Ralph shared her experiences of knowing Cicely Tyson personally. As part of her time, Stanley Morgan cut away to a pre-recorded interview done with Ms. Tyson in 2018. The talk and interview were truly inspiring.

I was very happy that I took the time to register for this event and give kudos to FEW for partnering with Stanley Morgan to present this program. I hope there will be other, equally stimulating, programs in the foreseeable future. Thank you for this one.
